Question for prior service coasties who are familiar with or have done an inter-service transfer.
How do awards transfer over from other branches to the coast guard? Or more specifically marine corps awards. (NAM, shooting badges, sea service, etc.)

The CG Medals and Awards manual (CIM 1650.25D) addresses this question best but here’s the basics. "Prior service members. Coast Guard personnel who previously served in another branch of the Armed Forces and received personal, good conduct, unit, campaign, and/or service awards listed in enclosure (22) are authorized to wear them on the Coast Guard uniform with the exception of marksmanship medals and ribbons.” It’s important to note that your prior-service award must be listed in enclosure (22) of this manual to be authorized to wear on a CG uniform. Both the Navy Achievement Medal (NAM) and Navy/Marine Corp Sea Service Deployment ribbon as well as Marine Corp Good Conduct Medal are listed in enclosure (22). This manual is reviewed and updated frequently so the rules can change but in the 26 years spent on AD with the CG, I never had to remove any prior-service ribbons due to a manual/policy update. The CG wearing of prior-service qualification insignia, devices, and badges is addressed in the CG Uniform Regulation manual (CIM 1020.6I Chapter 4). It says: "Prior service insignia must be a qualification type insignia. The following are not authorized for wear on Coast Guard uniforms (not all inclusive): Prior service command type insignia, special assignments (to include duty badges), shoulder tabs (ranger, special forces, etc.), marksmanship or weapons qualifications, driver and mechanic, positional related (command advisor, counselor, instructor, recruiter, etc.).” You can find most of these manuals with an internet search.
