PREFACE
Jon Hall’s preface draft In the quietest moments of our lives, amidst this world that is constantly astir, there often lies a silence that that is so loud, it’s impossible to not hear. This silence is the space where countless veterans grapple with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The aftermath of combat veteran’s mind is something that is still poorly understood by many who have not witnessed or experienced combat 1st hand. Interestingly, according to the Department of veterans affairs, 7 out of every 100 Veterans (or 7%) will have PTSD. It’s a staggering number considering all of the veterans transitioning from military service to civilian service, and the lack of focus on veterans mental health during that transition. What most fail to understand is that PTSD is not just a condition; it is a profound narrative of survival, resilience, and the relentless human spirit. Allow me to introduce you to a warrior, veteran, father and finally, the Author, Bill Stephens. His book “The Broken Mirror” illuminates the many facets of PTSD, drawing from Bill Stephen’s accounts of walking through fire, both in combat and at home. This book is a journey through the testimony of trauma, the depths of human emotion, and the many crossroads to healing a disorder that is invisible, intolerable and seemingly invincible at times. The genesis of this book lies in the recognition that PTSD is often misunderstood, stigmatized, and overlooked. Many suffer in silence, feeling isolated and detached from the world around them. It is our hope that through the pages of this book, we can foster a greater understanding of PTSD and the many facets of transitioning from military service to becoming a civilian. The Broken Mirror highlights the accounts of Bill’s spoken and documented thoughts and feeleings, his transformation from a soldier to civilian, and he offers a beacon of hope to those affected along with his thoughts on the world around him through his transition to becoming a civilian. Each section delves into different aspects of Bill’s life, struggles and depression, successes and victories, homecomings and homewregckings. Each word of each entry builds a story of a man who has given his life for service. His service and experiences to be un replicated by most, but familiar to so many. Throughout this book, you will find Bill’s voice that represents offer his perspectives and personal experiences. His voice is integral to understanding the multifaceted nature of transitions from military service and the individualized paths to recovery. He remind us that healing is not a linear process but a deeply personal journey that requires compassion, patience, and support. In reading The Broken Mirror and writing this preface, I am reminded through my own accounts of the courage it takes to confront and cope with the memories of combat, PTSD and that hard transition to what American society deems as normal. To those who are struggling, know that you are not alone. There is a community of individuals, professionals, and loved ones who stand with you, ready to support and guide you through your healing journey, such as Bill. The Broken Mirror is dedicated to all those who have faced the shadows of combat and emerged with a story to tell. It is a tribute to their strength, their resilience, and their unyielding hope for better days on the horizon. May Bill’s book serve as a source of knowledge, comfort, and inspiration. And may it remind us all of the power of understanding, empathy, and the human capacity for healing, after war.
