The war will always wage on whether it’s in our heads, under our boots, or a hundred yards in front of our rifle. These war movie scenes may not be real, but each time you watch them, they will undoubtedly make you feel some type of way.
Sgt. Elias in “Platoon”
It’s never easy seeing a soldier go down...too many people can relate to seeing it firsthand with their own eyes. In the movie, Jack sees his fallen brother and makes a split-second decision to go back and grab him. As he’s heading back...he goes down too. The look on his face will give you chills.
Doc in “Hamburger Hill”
This one hurts just because it’s too real. Doc knows it’s the end and he’s not going to tip-toe around it. His brothers try to keep him positive, but Doc isn’t playing any games...he knows better. All they can do is live in those final moments.
Shugart & Gordon in “Blackhawk Down”
So many emotions come up in this scene...hate, anger, worry, and plain admiration for all our combat soldiers. It makes you want to just jump in there and help these guys out yourself. The scene as a whole is pretty emotional - makes you proud to have such brave guys having our country’s back.
Michael Slowens in “Tears of the Sun”
Slo is a stud and no one ever expects a beast like him to go down. You can’t help but feel it when he takes responsibility for the situation and says, “it wasn’t supposed to happen like this…”
Wardaddy in “Fury”
When it’s the end, it’s the end. Can’t do anything about it, but try and keep your head down and pray for your brothers. Just another one that shows you the harsh reality of those situations.
Matthew Axelsons in “Lone Survivor”
It’s just a movie, but this scene makes you feel like you’re there. Axelsons looks like he shouldn’t be able to move and then suddenly, his intense training kicks in. He just keeps going until the bitter end because he straight out refuses to go down easy.
Private Witt in “The Thin Red Line”
This one makes you think about the final moments. You can’t help but wonder what guys are thinking at the end. Are they calm? Scared? Proud? We’ll never know, but this one sure makes you wonder.
Lieutenant Rorke in “Act of Valor”
You can’t help but get shivers when you watch this scene. No one even sees the grenade coming, and a split second changes everything. Without second-guessing himself for a second, Lieutenant Rorke sees the grenade, sees his team, and chooses to give up his life for his brothers’ survival. Shows us how much courage, bravery, and selflessness comes with the U.S. military.
Private Stanley Mellish in “Saving Private Ryan”
This one is maybe the biggest killer. Almost makes you feel like the core of what war is is right inside you. One guy makes it out, and another one doesn’t. You feel for Mellish as he fights as hard as he can, but can’t make it out. And then you don’t know what to feel about the other American who dropped the ball...he lost his gut in the middle of battle because he just wanted to live. It’s one of the most unfair things in this life, but it’s the reality of it all.
