To think, less then 100 years before, Rollo, a Danish warleader gone viking, was given Normandy by the King of France in exchange for NOT sacking Paris. Alfred, and his son and grandson may have unified the kingdoms of England, but they never really solved the Dane problem. Fun fact, the only reason William was able to accomplish this was because another Dane, Cnut, or as the English historians say, Canut the Great, had sons from two different wives, who tore apart the one and only time England, Norway, Denmark, Finland were all unified under 1 king. This happened because all his sons managed to kill each other.
