Because it is against Federal law to keep such a registry, and any such registry WOULD be abused.

The only non-seizure purpose in registration that I can see is proof of ownership. If you have a gun stolen, the serial number is the unique identifier of that gun.
To prove that it is in reality your property, you would need to keep a bill of sale or other document proving your rightful ownership of that firearm. It does not take any part of a state or local government to provide such a "service" to a gun-owner. We can handle that task without government "help", thank you just the same.

My uncle gave me my first rifle without any paperwork. So, that's something to consider these days.

CPL Douglas Chrysler - Yep. The rule is "Possession is 9/10 ths of the law". What I was considering was in the absence of a bill of sale, to perhaps have your guns and serial numbers listed on a document that is checked and verified by a notary public. The notary doesn't need to keep a copy of your list, so you have the only objectively verified listing of your firearms with verification that you are the rightful owner of those guns.
