As the pandemic settled in and I watched the political response, I began to speculate that the government was using this opportunity to incite fear and thus increase its control over our lives. Unlike FDR who warned, "We have nothing to fear but fear itself", the current response is "Be afraid, be very afraid." Thus, in the past year we have seen the growth of calls for socialism as people cower from a disease that represents the greatest threat they have ever known. And those who refuse to submit are castigated as allies of this enemy.
No, I am not an anti-vaxer. I have received both required shots of the Pfizer vaccine, and I take "reasonable" precautions. As someone who picked up a dose of malaria in Vietnam and was exposed to Agent Orange, I understand my risk factor is greater than others my age. Still, I am not afraid and I am not cowering as the government constantly makes proclamations and then reverses them daily. Keeping US off balance adds to the confusion and sense of fear.
After watching this video, I began to wonder if fear is the factor that really divides America today. I've seen a few discussions on the topic and taken part in them here on RallyPoint. None of them ever seemed to satisfy me in their conclusions. None of them focused on the use of fear as a totalitarian weapon. Still, it is clear that American is well-protected by those who do not fear but the voting majority is electing those who incite fear.
What say you?
