Thank you my friend SGT (Join to see) for the reminder that on July 31, 1917, during the Great War [pre WWII name] the Battle of Passchendaele (Third Battle of Ypres) began.
My paternal grandfather and his brother were British Expeditionary Army lance corporals. His recorded were destroyed during the fire bombing of London which destroyed most of records fro enlisted men from WWI. It is likely that he and his brother were involved in this battle.

That whole thing must have been horrible. This was the offensive that cause PM David Lloyd George to withhold further troops from the BEF because Haig would just waste them charging at machine guns.
