Ah well my observation, New Yorkers need to work on their bad habits a little bit. Sticking your bare fingers into a salad bar container to "Sample" what is in it or "Sampling" and eating in a Buffet line I have observed several do during my trips to NYC. Not only is it gross but it spreads germs. There is a reason for the glass shield on buffet lines and salad bars.
