SGT John " Mac " McConnell, Wade Hampton II purchased land and built a retreat in Cashiers, NC, which in 1933 became High Hampton Inn. It was there that Wade Hampton III learned to ride horses that served him so well as a cavalry leader during the War of Northern Aggression.
My wife and I have stayed there a number of times. LTC Stephen F. MCPO Roger Collins

SGT John " Mac " McConnell, it was quite unusual and considered quite rustic. The attached rooms and detached cabins had no A/C, heat, phones or TVs. Heat in the rooms was only installed sometime in the nineties, if I remember correctly. There was one TV in the lobby.
Even with all these items lacking, everyone was still expected to dress for dinner! Ladies wore dresses and heels and men wore coats and ties.
Regardless, the place was always packed!

LTC Stephen F., it is interesting that although the Hamptons were South Carolinians, they went to the mountains of North Carolina to keep cool in the summer!
