Drill Sergeants. Did not like Sgts abbreviation. Commandant (of Cadets) was senior Va Militia (NG) officer. Superintendent was overall leader. Col. Smith. Jackson's famous and true quote on morning of Chancellorsville, "The Institute will be heard from Today". 0over 75% of the infantry Regiments had VMI grads '50-'52 commanding. Most got killed or wounded leading from the front. Jackson knew terrain and his lawmaker was the best in the Shenandoah Valley.

Thanks for the Post. VMI Grad. They were the drill shots for forming the Army of Northern VA. The commandant MAJ Gilford (spelling?) Wrote the Tactics and Drill Book, his co instructor was Thomas Jackson "Stonewall", who taught the best southern artillery men of the war. Field of Lost Shoes pretty accurate IMHO.

Shots was typed SGTS but spell check defeats my failure to edit, based on old confidence I am right!
