I'm barely an amateur on IT but it seems that it should have been fairly easy to locate the shooter. He used his actual name, they can get the DNS and IP address to locate the ISP. If he pays a bill the ISP knows some basic info. Should have been fairly easy. No tricks like the hackers use. Probably got lost in the shuffle of the thousands of inquiries.

Edit: In fairness, I believe he was homeless for awhile so that may have complicated tracking him down.

FBI stated to FOX News they investigated this lead and could not find the author of the specific You Tube video. It was reported this morning.

It might not have helped had they identified him and had him on radar, he would likely have claimed he was taking about shooting video as a videographer or something, but it also might have put him on radar in a way that might have gotten him Mental Health help or spotted something that might have made a difference.
