We should be buying this to replace our 1980s vintage MCMs. If it were not for the Brits and Aussies we would not have a mine hunting capability. Not well known outside some select circles, Austin Class LPDs were well designed to perform Mine Warfare Missions. I am not talking about bringing MSBs to sweep the Suez Canal like USS Nashville did with MINEDIV-125, but actual Minesweeping using Helos. Yes, flight deck, hangar space and all of the other things mentioned in this article.
I am sure our current LSDs could provide the same capability. Yes, we do need a more modern MSO and even MSB capability. Not all mines are deployed in the ocean.
