It would be interesting to see the Navy bring back the Monitors. Britain used them during WWI as floating batteries. Simply one or two really heavy guns on a self-propelled vessel.

There has been thought to using unmanned gun boats for the purposes of patrolling and mobile fire platforms

The rail gun is awesome. However, I've often wondered what a kinetic energy weapon (smart BB or Titanium rod) fired from space would do to either a fixed emplacement or a ship at sea.

Utterly vaporize it I imagine that is if all the hype about is true. Part of the star wars program was to laugh tungsten rounds from high orbit and Use the fall to speed up impact it could have the potential of leveling 3 city blocks.
