PO1 Tony Holland I think the real ID thing is bullshit. It is not going to make flying any safer. It just makes the sheeple at the airport feel like they are safer. Makes DHS look like they are doing something very useful. The reality is that it is not going to stop anything. It is the people on the ground doing the work that makes it safer. By finding terrorist ass bags before they get near a plane. Though if you look at the last few terrorist attacks, there have been more incidents on the ground than in the air. Terrorists have adapted to the new reality. Instead of blowing up a building with a plane, they drive a truck through a crowded outdoor market, shoot up a train, kill an ambassador during a speech. None of those could have been prevented by REAL ID. The reality is that if an individual is planning something like that, unless the person is completely retarded, there is no way to know it is going to happen until it starts.

Lt Col (Join to see) - And by the time anyone knew what was going on there would be so much panic that the stampede to get to an exit would cause people to be trampled, and otherwise crushed. Scary thought isn't it?

Lt Col (Join to see) - So I read your comment, then I went to lunch, and see this is happening while we were discussing how it could happen. My wife flys in and out of FLL for her business trips. Scary.

Things are pretty crazy right now.

PO3 Steven Sherrill - Wow. I didn't mean that as a step-by-step. But this is exactly what I'm saying...the kind of security TSA provides isn't going to prevent attacks, because there's always a softer target.

Lt Col (Join to see) - There always will be. No amount of security, is going to stop a person willing to sacrifice their own life for their cause (regardless of how misguided it is). Look at the shooting of Reagan. That was done to impress a girl, at least that is what he said. He came close to assassinating the President of the United States, for a woman who didn't know he existed. Judicious marksmanship, and he would have succeeded. Talking about one of the best guarded people on the planet, but when one is determined that doesn't matter. These terrorists are just as misguided, and equally determined to cause fear. Good luck countering that. The only thing we can do is be more vigilant in our daily lives. Not live in fear, but be more aware. Not hiding in our homes, but being prepared for such an event.

What gets me is that RealID has been years in the making. Every state has had, what, 5 or 6 years to meet the requirements? And with the usual 4 year limitation on State ID that means everyone in that state would have gotten a RealID by now.
I also happen to agree with this NOT being a deterrent at all. The only thing it may cut down on are forgeries - for the next few years until all of the forgers are retooled to handle hologram markers.

Why isn't California on that list? An invading army could land on our west coast beaches and the CA DMV would be there handing out driver's licenses together with welfare checks
