The bones are referred to as a new species of early human found not far from Johannesburg. There was a NOVA special about the find, recently.
Interesting short video about excavating. If I am not mistaken they seem to be saying it is a "missing link" after Australiapithecus before Homo Sapiens and from which homo sapiens (among others?) originated.
One observation they make I thought was interesting . . . the physical changes (apparently from Australiapithecus?) that resemble our species appear on the outside of the body as an adaptation to the environment - the internal differences do not resemble our species as much. (Would be interesting to understand how that is deduced from a skeleton).
