Tillerson says diplomacy with North Korea has‘failed’; Pyongyang warns of war

Imagine that. We finally have a Secretary of State with the common sense to see the obvious and the courage to speak of it. Of course diplomacy has failed with North Korea. It always has because its leaders are protected from the consequences of international pressures and sanctions by China. And, as usual, Pyongyang warns of war. What else would they do? What else have they ever done? Well, there was that one exception when Clinton gave them what they wanted in exchange for promises that Pyongyang never intended keeping.
Yes, I know someone else posted this very same link on RP and I could have commented there. But their posting was hidden behind a rant against the Administration and other non sequiturs. You can't have a rational discussion starting at that point, can you?
So, what can we do? We continue to use diplomacy on China to understand and lower the shield on North Korea. Meanwhile, we isolate North Korea to prevent it from infecting the rest of the world. What else can we do?

Bubba told us that there was nothing to worry about. North Korea can be trusted to live up to any agreement. After all if you just talk to Communist Dictators that starve their own people into submission - they will eventually come over to your way of thinking. As John Lennon and Bubba said - all we need is love ..... Yeah that worked well

It was easier to hope and talk about strategic patience rather than do the hard work of tough diplomacy and escalation. We have kicked this can down the road about as far as it can be kicked. It is time to leverage the Chinese harder and to put Pyonyang on the defensive.
I think we need to let them know we will shoot down the next missile they launch. China needs to understand this WILL impact our relationship if they do not engage fully with NK. A war, of course, is the last option. Seoul is within striking distance so letting them move first is not an option. We would end up at a tactical nuclear strike against their forces on the ground. There are not enough US and SK forces on the ground to stop them, period. We cannot let Seoul fall, again.
The options, should China not be able to stand them down, may be war.

Tens of millions of South Koreans are within range of massive amounts conventional artillery form the north. Any preemptive strike from us us going to end up costing a LOT of friendly lives. that simply can not be ignored, especially since NK has a known CBW capability.

1stSgt Nelson Kerr - What exactly do you think Pyongyangs goals are? They want to reunify Korea on their terms. Once they have a nuke they have an ace in the hole. If you wait on them you will have doomed Seoul to fall. They will be there in a day after they shell it as they approach. Our only choice will be battlefield nukes to stop the NK's as we do not have enough boots to stop them conventionally. The notion of waiting for them is what has gotten us here. If you are living in Seoul your future is in the hands of a mad despot.

Their goals are more like they want to keep the family in power in their own little fiefdom and want to intimdatell everyone else into allowing that.
