More than 6,000 troops, veterans and family members attend Ashford, almost exclusively online.
Ashford University withdrew its request to receive GI Bill certification in California, further endangering benefits for more than 6,000 veterans attending their mostly online program, according to a report filed Tuesday.
Bridgepoint Education, the university’s parent company, withdrew its request for certification from the state of California on June 30, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission report.

I attended a state university in Ohio under the older GI bill. It was a long time ago, but I graduated with no debt. Of course it was nationally accredited.

VA will pay for nationally accreditation, but it's hard won if you get a regional school to accept it.

It's OK I did several semesters there and was disgusted by their for profit prices. Vets deserve a school that doesn't gouge them such as WGU. Servicemen get it almost completely paid for by FT as well.

SGT (Join to see) - sgt, I've delved myself into some hefty college debt by schools like devry, ashford, and the likes. There are very few schools that had private acceptable cost programs. Amu-apus had some reasonable prices, wgu, perhaps new Hampshire, but the rest get shady. I think our vets deserve better than diploma mills. I want others to benefit from what was learned by my mistakes.

CPL(P) (Join to see), Can those on line colleges grades be transferred to an accredited college? I don't know that much about them, just the TV ads. Does the VA recognize the on line colleges, and pay for them?

Sgt, these things can be transferred on a per school basis. First they check is it regionally accredited... this regional accreditation is higher than national and it is required to allow for title 4 (I believe) funding (student loans). Then you have to get the school that you want to go to, to take the credits. Sometimes they just don't match up. Sometimes there are caps at how much you can transfer. Usually 50% of a degree program. There are some programs like straigherline.com that you can get some credits if you need them, but you must check with your school to see if they count them. That's one way to save. The VA recognizes online schools.
The reason I mentioned the WGU program is because they hold regional accreditation in all the regions and then they have no limit to how many classes you get done in their 6 month semesters. Also it only costs $3250 for a masters per semester, and $2850 for a bachelor semester. It's crazy cheap. I don't know if they changed prices, but this is what I would consider the maximum price education should cost unless it's medical school or something of the likes.
