My neighbor of many years ago was a man named Julius Schneider who joined the Navy in 1915 and became on of the first Naval aircraft mechanics in Navy history. He told me about having to fly them after he repaired them so as to not risk the loss of a pilot. He lived until 1986 which was long enough for him to witness first hand the evolution of military aviation from canvas covered bi-planes to the
F-16 C.

Great read. Recall studying and discussing this in SOS back in the 70s. IMO the standoff weapons of today make those dogfights of the past less and less of a possibility.
