I think it's an important question as it immediately points to survivors of the Holocaust and gives special emphasis to their voice. One thing is for sure, it didn't happen over night, it was years of oppression.

Bonhoffer is one my favorite theologians, are you familiar with him? An invaluable voice of the 20th century, especially when studying Germany's rocky past. He once said:

"We are not to simply bandage the wounds of victims beneath the wheels of injustice, we are to drive a spoke into the wheel itself."
