Book review. I recognized the mentioned trend in the late 70's. So, before I enlisted in '83 I had already completed an apprenticeship in Multicraft maintenance. I never did get that BS. I quit formal schooling with 104 hours of a 116 hour program, didn't need those Liberal arts classes to work with hand tools, and didn't want the degree that would over qualify me for the hands on job I wanted. After the MMRB gave me my walking papers. The only times I wasn't gainfully employed was if I decided I wanted a break for a week or 2. When I retired it was from a $100K/yr Union job, still working with hand tools and test equipment on a daily basis. I didn't want a management position. We tech folks got paid more than our managers. To this day I tell youth to get in to the skilled trades. An Apprenticeship or Tech School typically takes 2-4 years to complete and you make lots more than a barista.

Diplomas and degrees have their uses. They open doors, but only a crack. I tell kids to focus on getting skills, marketable skills. No one makes money with diplomas and degrees. They earn their living with skills.

SGT (Join to see) i wasn’t permitted to take shop. It would have had far more value than learning to sew in Home Ec. I thought then and made my opinion known. I was overridden and have to learn on my own or from someone kind enough to show.me. I never sewed anything except a simple seam.

Maj Kim Patterson It's a whole different world out there now. Women still have dis-proportionally low numbers in the field but it is rising. The field is so open that employers are looking closely at all qualifying candidates. If You know any that are interested in being financially independent and recognized for their skills not their bra size. Look in to Mechatronics as an alternative to a BA, or an Apprenticeship. The plant I worked in had many outside contractors doing installations and retrofits and they all had Women apprentices on their crews.
