This story begins with a pretty large error. While I agree with the articles sentiment it is important to be factually correct.

Grant was a Republican. He accepted the Republican nomination at the 1868 GOP convention in Chicago. His predecessor (Johnson) was Lincoln's Vice President, he was democrat but ran with and served in Lincoln's administration. Lincoln, we all should know, was a Republican as well. It is doubtful Grant wanted to crush the very party he belonged to, is it not?
