This reminded me that I read some of the excerpt from the book "A Very Stable Genius" which is the recently released book to "prove" that Trump is everything but. The part that struck me was about Mattis, Tillerson, and Cohn having a briefing for Trump on the value of NATO and the need to Continue the Current Policy in the Middle East. Of course, Trump wasn't very impressed. While I have a lot of respect for Mattis, trying to intellectually or rationally defending NATO or the seeming endless wars on the Middle East is beyond me. The further along we go, at least in some cases, Trump's path seems to have produced more results. Then we get the breaking story about how the "progress" in Afghanistan was fabricated by the commanders on the ground. It's time to consider if there is anything left for us to "Win" in the area. If not, then let the troops go home.
The recovery of the energy sector in the US has made the Middle East increasing irrelevant to our economy, which was the reasoning behind most of these interventions. The previous administrations have FUBAR'd the area so much, I don't see any reasonable solution that doesn't involve just killing a couple pesty factions to the last man. It's time to consider our own interest and protect them instead of these useless and highly unsuccessful nation building exercises that we apparently suck at.
