The NFL and holdouts: What's your take?
The largest publicized holdout right now is the one that Kam Chancellor just ended with the Seattle Seahawks:
Of course that is not the only one by any means, and players around the league somewhat habitually (multiple top stars every season) hold out from training camp for more money.
What are your thoughts on this process and how it affects the game. Is it necessary to negotiate, or is it a hindrance to the game?

"Individual Strike" - if unions can do it in masses and have success...why can't professional athletes, in this case, NFL players. I'm inclined to side with the professional athlete - you're at a level of a sport in which you only have "x" number of years before you start to decline and reach a point of no longer being able to play. So since greed is out of control anyways at the professional sports level - why not allow a player to "holdout" to maximize his/her earnings while they can?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not for these ridiculously huge contracts - but since they are there for the taking, I don't blame the individual athlete for benefitting from it.

LCDR (Join to see) - That won't happen though Sir. As long as the fans are willing to pay the ridiculous prices, the NFL can charge whatever they want and as such have the capital to pay players which allows the players to hold out for more.
Everyone, not saying you in particular, decries the issues of how much money is in sports, but everyone tunes in, buys the jerseys, and goes to the games.

MAJ (Join to see) no you can include me. I've been to an NFL game this season already (preseason though so it was a lot cheaper). I went to an opening season one last year (a lot more money), bought a jersey last year too. You're right I suppose. If I really wanted to send a statement, I wouldn't do those things. But I love the game :).

LCDR (Join to see) - I'm in the same boat sir! It is the nature of sports, and the various organizations and players understand that.
Also consider that many of these elite athletes take an insane beating and have to be prepared to cover healthcare costs for the rest of their lives for various injuries.

MAJ (Join to see) I will give you the health care aspect. Also I know it seems absurd but they get pulled into a lifestyle that isn't sustainable on a normal person's salary. It is a little hard to blame them for that part.

Sometimes as fans, we forget this is simply business. If my star player asks for another $1,000,000, I'll be happy to absorb the elevated cost of my seat in the stadium. Why? Because, 1.) I support capitalism; and 2.) I'm a fan(atic).

Capt Mark Strobl very true and I'd do the same as well. That said, it's usually not as simple as that with the salary cap. It actually often means someone else has to be cut, maybe not this year, but almost certainly next year.
