Did you know that Naval Academy Class of 1939 hero Capt. Edward “Ned” Beach Jr., was a midshipman who received word of the “invasion” through typical channels — a friend busted into his room and yelled, “Turn on the radio! The Martians have landed in New Jersey!” Called to action, Ned wanted to put Bancroft Hall on Alert. Murray Frazee, the midshipman who tipped Ned off about the “invasion,” went on to become the Executive Officer of the USS Tang in World War II under Richard H. O’Kane.
October 30 is the anniversary of the 1938 Mercury Theater on the Air’s radio production of “War of the Worlds” — a dramatization of a Martian invasion that put both Orson Welles and Grovers Mill, N.J. on the map.
