We had some amazing units and individuals over the years. A great example is COL "wild Bill" Donovan. He ran the OSS, and was incredible in his abilities to plan and execute missions that should have been impossible. Beckwith was able to see what was working for others and apply. We had SOF elements but nothing that really filled that bill. He is a true legend.

Robert have you ever read anything on the Son Tay raid? I think the book is The Raid. Wow!!!

LTC Jeff Shearer - There are several books that were written about the Son Tay Raid. My favorite is called "The Son Tay Raid: American POW's in Vietnam were not forgotten" by John Gargus. There is another book called "The Raid: The Son Tay Prison Rescue Mission" written by Benjamin F. Schemmer.

A true American hero and legend. Beckwith was among the true pioneers of modern day SOF. Another legend was Col. Arthur D "Bull' Simons. Among his many accomplishments during his 30 year career was to lead the Son Tay Raid.
