Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that on December 23, 1944 Gen. Dwight Eisenhower endorsed the finding of a court-martial in the case of Eddie Slovik, who was tried for desertion, and authorized his execution, the first such sentence against a U.S. Army soldier since the Civil War, and the only man so punished during World War II.

TSgt Joe C., author William Bradford Huie wrote an excellent account of the event entitled "The Execution of Private Slovik", first published in 1954. Then President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who had authorized the execution as commander of the Allied Forces, tried to stop publication of the book.
Slovik was the last U.S. serviceman to be executed for an act of omission (desertion).
