My (5 greats I believe) uncle, Lew Wallace. Army general, governor of New Mexico, and author of a great story. Good to see him recognized here.

I thought Charlton Heston was great in the movie that was made from the book also.

He was unquestionably maligned for his division's failure to get to the fighting at Day One during the Battle of Shiloh (staff failure on route surveillance) and his overall record was solid if uninspired during his time in uniform.
One of many middling level officers of both sides who did their jobs w/o flash. He is a good representative of those who learned the hard way by doing and in doing so did the mid level leadership required to fight the War.
