I made the mistake of telling a Marine Major in my office that I didn't know about him when I was at HQUSCENTCOM. We spent the remainder of the day educating this AF guy! Great share.

I was lucky in that respect. My uncle was in the 9th Marines who came ashore at Red Beach as the first conventional combat units in South Vietnam who were defending the Da Nang Air Base. When he was discharged, he brought all his books home. Many of them were histories of the Marine Corps. I read most of them. He had books from Robert Leckie and Eugene Sledge as well as a host of books on Marine Corps history. It was quite the education. Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen

SGT (Join to see) That sounds like a better way to learn Marine history, but honestly I did enjoy our "talks" about the Marines.

Those who seek to know more about Marine MajGen Smedley D. Butler should find a copy of his book: "War is A Racket". I believe it's still in print.
