I hunt feral pigs. It is the only hunting I do anymore. They are considered a nuisance animal and may be hunted anytime. The really big ones go 800lbs+ live weight. Although I've never taken one more than about 300lbs. In the last 20 years I've harvested about 50. In northern Michigan it is almost always a meeting engagement with surprise contact inside 100 yards. In thick vegetation a boar defending its turf or sounder (herd) can cross that in less than six seconds. More of my kills have been with a boar spear on foot or horseback; than a rifle, shotgun, or pistol. And when you get knocked down, no cup of coffee tastes better than your next one.

I almost went boar hunting with spear in Hawaii when I was stationed there, but never was able to coordinate it. We had plenty of them there. A lieutenant who worked the graveyard shift in the Stratcom Comm Ctr where I was operations officer was walking home one night without paying attention and found himself in the middle of a herd of them. He froze in place. His wife, wondering where he was, stuck her head out their second story window and saw what was happening. She barked like a dog and they scattered...

CPT Jack Durish - Pigs don't like dogs. But pig sows with piglets are every bit as dangerous as bear sows with a cub. And boars around females in heat are more likely to charge than retreat. I enjoy the feral pig hunt. My wife thinks its a little crazy to hunt something that hunt's you back. Every time I've hunted anything else it was just to put good food on the table.
Pigs are cooperative with each other in the attack, so it takes some strategic thinking if you and your boar spear come on anything but a solitary pig. Try it, I bet you'll enjoy it; but get familiar with and comfortable with the spear before you go out.
