Well the British did dislodge the Americans from Long Island and almost destroyed the Continental Army except for, what I believe was miraculous intervention.

Absolutely, thanks in part to Loyalist Tory elements who showed them how to flank the Colonial Army lines. The reality is that the colonies lost more battles than they won, though they did manage to win when it was crucial, and they never gave up. I am confident that Divine Intervention played a key role in the eventual victory. I have also observed that Washington was a quick learner. He made a lot of mistakes, but rarely, if ever made the same one twice.
