In the U.S., earthquakes are most commonly reported in areas like California and Alaska, with some quakes rattling places such as Texas as a result of fracking. Earthquakes with a magnitude of less than 7 don't typically cause extensive damage or fatalities, but smaller ones can still shock residents living in areas that don't usually experience the tremors.

There is a fault line in that area, so uncommon it may be but not unprecedented.

We had just moved to Oklahoma about 8 years ago, and I was in the garage squatted down having a cigarette. The hair on my arm stood up about about 2-3 seconds before a quake shook everything. In the position I was in, I felt like I was surfing. We had another one a few weeks later while I was in the tub (No shower in that bathroom) and I had water splashing out of the tub. Pretty cool, but used up some towels to dry things back up.
