Maybe the Army should do the same for it's aviators. The Air Force seems to just handle people a little bit better. The potential issue is that individuals that have the desire to be in charge for the wrong reasons may seek the leadership track potentially creating poor command environments.

I would agree with this Chief. The only stipulation I’d have is that they limit promotions, you only want to fly, then you’d be limited to CW3, no chance for CW5 without leadership time. I would also add that those who assume leadership tracks should earn a stipend which would need to be higher than flight pay. Leadership and command time is already to few and far in between for Officers. In a commissioned officers 24 year career, we can only expect to command for 6 of the 24 years it takes to earn a promotion to Colonel and CSL selection for Brigade Command. Is it the staff time that bothers the aviators?

If we look at it that way most MOS's in the army do the same job day in and day out. Do we not promote those individuals either? I think we may be missing the point. Warrants are designed to be technical and tactical experts in their chosen field. An SME if you will. We are an inch wide but a mile deep in our knowledge. Officers are paid to be a mile wide and an inch deep, it is comparing apples to oranges. That is why we are here, to provide a depth of knowledge few Officers or NCOs for that matter will ever possess. We are a one trick pony, by doctrine. We aren't paid to lead, manage yes.

Additionally there is very little opportunity if any for leadership time, at least in aviation, until the W4 or W5 level and that is onesies and twosies at best. It is our expertise that makes us different.

It almost sounds like treating them similar to Warrant Officers but still paying them as Commissioned Officers. I say similar because Warrant Officers in Aviation are now used in a variety is of roles in and out of the cockpit.

Absolutely keep the Warrant Officers Sir. We are what makes Army aviation possible. Just offer a non command flight track to LTs, CPTs, MAJs, and maybe LTCs with the understanding they will never command or be in charge. The only problem is that in the Army we already have that in the WO Corps.
