I had to check to see if this was Duffel Blog just off that headline. Seriously?
"“We were there with a purpose," he said. "And up to today, from 2002, I will tell you that there’s a lot more safety and security because of the actions taken ― not only by myself, personally, but by my peers.”"
Key word - were there with a purpose. In 2002 and initial years - yes there was a purpose. The purpose was to get bin Laden. They got him in 2010 - in Pakistan. Now there's no purpose to be there other than those making decisions fucked up.
"“Our policy was to create a strong central government which was idiotic because Afghanistan does not have a history of a strong central government,” a former State Department official said in 2015, according to documents obtained by the Post. “The timeframe for creating a strong central government is 100 years, which we didn’t have.”"
Ding, ding, ding. Spot on.

2011 we got bin Laden. But anyway. Every grunt on the ground in Afghanistan knew bin Laden wasn't in country, he was in Pakistan. Kids would tell us he was in Pakistan. Objective wise, bin Laden wasn't even in the top 10 for CCIR. Leaders have to have a clear intent in war. We had nothing of the sort in Afghanistan.
