“Orban is an opportunist. He would get very little out of siding with Russia these days. Future support from Putin is very uncertain and might not play well with his own electorate. This thing has gone against Putin in just about every way possible. Not only militarily but politically. Instead of showing fractures in the Europe wide / US bond he has strengthened their unity. Instead of tepid and patchwork sanctions he expected from past sanctions, he's been hit with coordinated and deep reaching sanctions. He's actually strengthening the position of foreign adversaries, including Biden.
The biggest problem I now see is that Putin has backed himself into a corner. It would be very good if we could find a way to offer him a way out.

We are offering him a way out. Ukraine and Russia finished the first round of negotiations. The issue is ensuring Russia actually makes concessions instead of demanding surrender.

LTC Eugene Chu - That's good, but it has to be more than just Russian needs to pull out. He likely isn't going to do that willingly if he can't claim, well something. Putin needs something he can claim as a win to his people. We don't want to give him enough where he's encouraged to do this again, but he does need a way to save face or those peace talks will not reach a conclusion we want.
