Residents of a Massachusetts community remain divided on whether a Palestinian flag should be raised to fly above the town commons from now until December.
A heated town meeting saw tempers flare over a teenage resident's request for the flag to be flown on the North Andover Town Common, but ultimately, officials agreed to approve a permit for the flag on Monday evening. An Israeli flag has been flying in the same spot since last month, and Palestine supporters said they should have the same right.

Good to know our youth have a more nuanced sense of what equality means than many adults have - and that they are presenting rational reasons that are being heard.
When something terribly brutal is happening that creates a threat and a passionate response, people predictably take sides without a good background understanding. It is not necessarily the time that people are interested in learning more to gain a more reliable understand of the circumstances. Having actual friends in both camps who live where the problem is makes a good difference. But that is not everyone's situation, before the fact.<sigh>
