Well Col, I'm not too young to remember. I have three National Defense Ribbons, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and OEF. I would like to know how you define "cakewalk". I believe it COULD have been easy but the current administration had no planning to execute a safe and secure exodus even though they were warned that the Taliban takeover would be a swift one. Given, the exodus from Vietnam was a debacle but I believe the exodus from Afghanistan was even worse. And yes, I was there for both. Agreed the soldiers from Afghanistan were not spat upon and harassed as we were from Vietnam. But just like SSgt Barrows stated, "over [login to see] [login to see] 000 vets are pissed as hell." I totally agree with that. Yes, we should have exited the country but only after plans were in place to get, not only Americans, those that wanted to leave out in a safe and secure manner. There never should have been masses gathered at the airport and clinging to aircraft only to lose their lives. An orderly exit was possible if planned correctly.

Typically - yes. But don't judge based on a profile.
I graduated HS in 78. I was almost 24 when I went to boot camp. From 6th grade through 9th grade it was nightly "the Vietnam War". With a family that served in WW-I (grandfather, great uncle), WW-II (father, mother, uncle) and Korea (father) there was always talk about the progress of the "war". It was a part of almost every Civics class I took, it was something in the forefront of my mind with the draft still going.
Speaking of which, a googled high level, no effort account of any portion of the conflict would never have flown. It was a deep dive at the library, interview a handful of veterans, get a perspective on what happened and how, emotions, all of it. Our HS reports on the matter were never less than 20 pages, typed, single spaced.

Until we stopped Al Qaeda After that you're absolutely right. The whole reason was stopping terrorists who committed 9/11.
