JCN chief counsel Carrie Severino said in a blog post that Judge Merrick’s record on the bench since 1997 “leads to the conclusion that he would vote to reverse one of Justice Scalia’s most important opinions, D.C. vs. Heller, which affirmed that the Second Amendment confers an individual right to keep and bear arms.”

Let's say that this is an acceptable choice. Then I'll have to withdraw my objections to Mitch McConnell's strategy and have a good laugh at Obama for failing to shift the balance of the court. However, to be honest, I don't trust "centrist". People who sit on the fence, truly in the center, must abandon all principles to occupy that space. Chief Justice Roberts is an excellent example, one who has disappointed many times by failing to place the Constitution first in his deliberations to appear "reasonable"

CPT Jack Durish The optimist in me wants to view moderate as one who will read the words of the constitution and apply that to cases brought before the court without emotion.
The realist in me agrees with you. Those sitting on the fence have to come off the fence when the time for a decision comes. Which raises the question of whether he will come down on the side of right or the side of convenience.

Judge Garland sounds closer to a Kennedy than a Roberts though. Opinionated on his interpretation of "specific" issues rather than trying to appear "reasonable.
