Gene, I am a great admirer of Russian literature, in translation as I do not speak Russian. My cousins speak Russian, but my grandmother, a first generation American, did not want to be stigmatized with her immigrant past. She refused to speak Russian at home.

Gumilev's ex-wife, Anna Akhmatova, is also one of the great 20th century poets. So many great Russian poets were persecuted by the communists. Ahkmatova, Gumilev, Mandelstam, Tsvetaeva, Pasternak, Blok, Yesenin, and Joseph Brodsky all had tortured lives. Joseph Brodsky defected to the United States. He not only was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, he was also appointed the Poet Laureate of the United States!
