New Army regulations OK dreadlocks for female soldiers

This isn't 1917 where the only people allowed to serve in uniform are White males with uniformed buzz cuts.

Major Woods: a big todo was made a long while back about the men shaving their heads . They made a valid point it would save them getting a haircut every ten days or so.. Costing whatever it takes at pix or bx barber for the cut. (I lived off base then and one of the women where I lived did a very pro job of cutting my hair regulation. of course I contributed to the house, quarters allow. & cooking meals, cleaning too.). Then haircuts weren't but $3.00! I don't know now because I haven't been on base a while.. it took time to just let the troops do it.. I knew a few and prob'ly some I didn't know did their hair in corn-rows
But wore wigs on duty. There were guys
Doing it too.. one guy, his ball cover got caught in the wig and when the cover came off, so did the wig, fortunately only a NCO and a couple Airmen seen the mishap..! I suppose she could get a natural colored wig.. wear that, as long as it was regs.styled. Safety factor enters in.. so I'll concede, maybe it could happen, but one style would have to be agreed on.. that going front of scalp to back to neck..

Like I said, this isn't the mid-1900s. American culture has changed and so has the diversity of individuals in uniform. Male grooming is simple to control, female grooming is more complicated with the ethnic diversity of the hair and unless you're suggesting haircuts for all females as part of uniformity....good luck with that.

You've misunderstood my comment. The female soldier in this picture isn't fashioned with dreadlocks but braids and from my perspective, true dreadlocks would look unprofessional in uniform and the term does imply an unkept braided hairstyle. Now if the regs were further defining and clarifying braids as an acceptable hairstyle in uniform then that demonstrates an understanding of the difference. I've even asked two Black female co workers their opinion about headline vs picture and they too agreed with me the usage of the term dreadlocks instead of braids is inappropriate.
