I cannot understand why we were willing to kill Soleimani but were unwilling to interdict the Iranian missile launch sites. There is absolutely no way that we didn't know their location the minute they stopped moving to set-up. Every nation has the right to protect itself, it's people, and its national security interests. However today threats can arise with such rapidity, that pre-emption is often the only course that offers some chance for success. Our soldiers and airmen should have had MIM-104 Patriot batteries for self protection. If their wasn't time for their deployment, we could have tasked the US Navy to cover with SM-2 missiles in combination with Tomahawks (TLAM) interdicting the launch sites. Would this have started a war? Perhaps something smallish, but containable. However the message it would have sent to the Russian Federation and the PRC, would have been invaluable. Sometimes secrecy runs counter to deterrence. Let the enemy see what we can do with already well established and documented weapons systems. Let them wonder what we have that they might not be aware of, or have only superficial knowledge of.
