I started out in RD-A School (Radarman). Then they changed the name to OS-A School but neglected to tell the Post Office, so nobody got mail for a couple weeks. Equipment was half tubes and half transistors, so there was a never ending unhappiness between analog and digital. If you see the movie Dr Strangelove, you'll see the plexiglas vertical plots. Part of A School was learning how to write backwards so we could stand behind the plots and not block the view of the people who used the information. Was that aircraft friend or foe? Offset the radar repeater to bring the target to the center of the scope and expand the pip. The trailing pips formed dashed lines that you'd interpret as 1, 2, 4, and 7 in blocks. That'd give you the IFF number. Always wore a jacket when underway as the A/C units had to run full tilt to keep all the equipment happy. The Snipes would see us shiver in the chow line and had choice words.
