The rules are pretty clear on the weight limit of bags. Besides if he is on return from Afghanistan, he is on official travel it shouldn't be a big deal to him. Just get a receipt and claim it on your travel voucher. BTW United is currently the Govt. contract carrier, he'll be flying on them again.

"The First Lieutenant was originally set to serve just nine months but decided to double his time overseas because he says he enjoys serving his country."

Call me cynical (yes I admit it) but this sounds like something a Poser/Stolen Valor guy would say. I know Guard personnel have strange deployment rules, it just sounds funky to me.

SSG (Join to see) - I know, right? I shipped three Tuffboxes home from A'Stan. This guy must be a glutton for self-induced punishment!

I know I was on a Petroleum Liaison team of 3, and we flew all over Afghanistan and even then we had to watch our bag weights. But we wore our body Armour etc and had to weigh it separately.

SSG(P) (Join to see) - Always easy to spot the service members at the check in counters: Who has a ridiculous amount of luggage? Mail that crap if it's work related and claim it on the other end!!

SCPO (Join to see) - Exactly! As someone who used to do a lot of non-work related travel, I try to travel as light as possible. I also try not to broadcast that I am military, though the haircut (or lack thereof) and general demeanor usually gives it away. I've also been mistaken for a Federal Air Marshal before too.
