Apparently Darvish is fair game for the gesture. You can rest assured had he blasted the N word at someone he would have been out for the rest of the season. What message does it send to suspend him for 5 games next season? Well, that the world series is more important that doing the right thing. If 5 games next year is okay, why not the 5 starting the game after the gesture? I think missing the rest of the world series would have set a precedent that would have turned every player in MLB's head around.
Then they donate some salary money to some charities for good measure and move on. This is the hypocrisy of professional sports.

PO1 (Join to see) - I think the fact that you did not play in the World Series would be far more punishment than the money. That is their primary goal from day one. I do think they are compensated by the team for winning pennants and the series if they do so.

Cpl Jeff N. - I agree with that. It is a big stage and would have been a huge punishment to be suspended during the WS.
They are compensated by the league based on how far they get in the playoffs. Just being on the roster guarantees that money so even if he was suspended for the series, he would still have played.
I think Manfred could have suspended him and then fined him if he was so insistent on making the punishment financial.
One interesting thing I read was that there was also fear that the MLBPA would have immediately filed a grievance or an appeal which would have stopped the suspension until it could get resolved which meant Gurriel would have been able to play in the WS even if he was suspended for a few games.

PO1 (Join to see) - The league should have forced the MLBPA to file the appeal. Let them be the ones that let a gesture like that go unpunished. The league should uphold a standard, period. In my opinion.

Cpl Jeff N. - I agree. It would have forced the MLBPA into a situation where they would have to defend a player or continue to offend a player. But, even if it was appealed, the language of the suspension could have made it meaningless if it was only the WS. Because if the series is over before the appeal, then there can be no real suspension, probably.

He's just mad that a Japanese pitcher didn't go easy on him. Apparently those wide eyes didn't do him any good.

Do any you realize that Yuli was born in Cuba, and only came to this country last year? What I mean is that he lived his entire life under a different set of rules (Castro Communism) where racism is prevalent. He hasn't been in this country that long, to understand all the nuances of PC culture here. Do I agree with what he did, no, but I think it would be nice if people didn't go from 0 to offended at the speed of light! Also, if you read Darvish's full statement, he accepted Yuli's apology, and said move on. If the person that made the offensive gesture, and the one it was made towards, have apologized and accepted the apology, then the rest of us should stay out if it.

Two things:
Racists are equaly as bad no matter what hole they climbed out of.
Darkish may be OK with that kind of open racism,or say so for professional reasons. That does not mean people affected bby that vile BS have to accept it
Think of this as a teaching moment.

1stSgt Nelson Kerr - I agree with you. My only issue is that we are applying 1st world morals on a guy who just left a 3rd world country. Wrong is wrong, but you've been overseas and seen some of these places.

Thay would work if racism was acceptable in Cuba any more than it is here. Even as far back as the 19th century Cuba has has had lessons tp teach us on that subject. If he had been from Argentina or Romania I might agree, but not Cuba. Not all third world countries are backwards on the same things

1stSgt Nelson Kerr - We may disagree, but I did a tour at GITMO, and the local Cubans were some of the worst that I had ever seen WRT racism.
