It's reported he was being harassed and bullied at work - even by superiors. Possibly even at the new unit because the Army "logic' is to move a victim to a different unit on the same base when they report sexual assault.
So - being bullied after being sexually assaulted and doing the "right thing" and reporting. He was hospitalized last month - not sure why but possibly mental or physical harm. He had no leadership, no one to support him there at the base. To me it sounds like he did the one thing he thought he had control over. The one option he thought he had left and he died by suicide.
MST is something the military and society needs to talk about more - affecting males AND females. Male sexual assault needs to be talked about more. We need to recognize that males can be and are assaulted.
This soldier was failed by his unit - both units he was in and every sexual assault victim is failed by the Army by not finding better ways to address this. I have been a SARC - and there is nothing worse than having to tell a victim that their case is ruled unsubstantiated because not enough evidence...because they didn't have the strength to report it a week sooner. A day sooner. To see the utter destruction of their soul through their eyes when you tell them the Army isn't going to do anything...and to not be able to do anything for them except say "If you need to talk to someone here are your resources." It's heartbreaking. To think that this soldier felt so utterly hopeless his only option was to take his life...it pisses me off.
