There is a lot of good information on here and USAA is an awesome resource for military members. I would add to the things that they've stated the following. Preparing for your civilian translation should start the first day you're in uniform. At some point, whether it be 4 years, 6 years or 30 years you will take on a civilian roll again. If you start preparing on day one and what I mean by that is get as much education under your belt as possible, save a little money, and make smart decisions such as keeping track of the details of what you do day to day so you can add them to your resume. You will be far better off for it when that transition comes. Keep in mind, and this comes from experience, all of us who have worn the military uniform have a difficult time transitioning back to civilian life. The reason for this is that we have become accustomed to a certain level of respect, a certain amount of passion and it comes to our jobs, loyalty with our brothers, and quite frankly that is very difficult to find in the civilian sector if you can find it at all!
