I have to wonder why anyone would take the medical schools at Yale or UC San Diego seriously based on this. Contagious because it appears to spread through social networks? No. Hail to the no. Fat people hang out with fat people? That doesn't mean that fatness is contagious.
I'm fat. Didn't contract it as a disease through a social network. I "contracted" it through beer and food. My "resistance" to the condition is weak because I don't get enough exercise. Seriously, it's not infectious disease - it's taking in too many calories relative to the number of calories burned over a long period of time. Maybe one day I'll move to a place that's got bike trails and mountains and hiking trails and stuff like that and I'll be back in shape, but for now, I'm fat because I eat and drink more than I exercise to burn.
Also, this article makes use of the utterly worthless BMI. That's what requires a Soldier to get a tape test during weigh-ins at the APFT. The tape test then determines whether or not you are actually fat. But this article is not taking into account the body fat composition determined by a tape-test or similar test. It is just going off the BMI. Which is useless.

Bad eating habits in families can be an underlying problem with either excess consumption or a factor junk food. A well balanced diet and cutting out daily consumption of fattening foods couple with some exercise and moving around. Don't just sit, do something even it its a simple as going for a walk or even household errands etc.
