Specialist teams are searching through Maui's charred ruins for those who are still missing, with only 3% of the affected area having been searched with cadaver dogs as of Sunday.
The confirmed death toll rose to 96 early Monday and is expected to increase.
The number of deaths means the fire, which devastated the town of Lahaina, is the deadliest wildfire in modern U.S. history, surpassing the 2018 Camp Fire in California, which killed 85.
Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said the damage was estimated at close to $6 billion. He said the fires were likely to be the largest natural disaster in the state’s history.

People need to also listen to the locals who say cancel your trips if you have any. I'm finding it really messed up to see the lack of empathy from certain people who won't cancel their trips or don't have any empathy for the loss of live, homes, everything.
In fact, locals have said for years stop coming. Also before anyone says tourism is the majority of Hawaii's economy - it's 21% of it. So no it's not.
Let them heal and rebuild at the very least. People who say "it was just one town." No it's going to affect more than that with all the displaced people. And the people who have been traipsing through the town...that's messed up too.
