This sounds more like a coached recounting of events rather than anything else.

There are debriefings from prisoners at GITMO one of which was part of the OPFOR force stating they were at about company strength and lost about 25 fighters. The Taliban are known to recover the bodies over their dead from the field, so even if they didn't find any when the QRF arrived it doesn't mean anything.

Lt Murphy's last satellite call is on record and there is actual OPFOR footage from the battle circulating that displays the ferocity of the firefight.

Finally after all this time he exactly remembers that Luttrell had "11 magazines fully loaded"? There is no way he remembers how many from literally years and years ago.

All these facts are open source and even with just those I'm highly skeptical to believe the information coming from the article.

All I know was the following reports for an additional information requested by NAVSOC before I left in 2006. What we picked up does not support the articles accusations. This is currently at the Pentagon Inspector Generals office. Also keep in mind the embedded influence of the media network domanant and apposed organizations. We are in a very gray area in that respect.

I wasn't there, but one very compelling analysis spelled out why there was virtually no way that the nearby populace could have supported more than a few dozen (30-40, max, is the number I recall) insurgents, effectively discrediting the much larger number of insurgents (scores? hundreds?) Luttrell claimed to have been engaged by.

SEALs are not invulnerable, and even the best uber-warriors can have a run of bad luck, TSgt (Join to see).

And I tend to put a fair amount of credence in the words of USMC officers with no apparent ax to grind.

I am not calling either a liar. I am stating my tactical opinion. I have been deployed to that region of Afghanistan and have experience with their tactics.

Might I point out that insurgents are no more fungible than our troops are, and probably much less so, TSgt (Join to see). An exceptional leader, or a serendipitous combination of above-average troops, can severely alter the ability of a SEAL team to operate -- and doubly so if they are the least bit over-confident.
