I love the U.S. flag and the flags of our services as much as anyone ... but having served doesn't exempt one from complying with the contracts they sign and the ordnances of the towns and cities in which they live. In fact, they should be setting an example for those that haven't served IMV. This guy shouldn't bitch ... and ought to request the exemption. As it stands, he's in the wrong.

He is in my neck of the woods... On the local news, the HOA has given him a deadline to sign a contract to allow the flags to fly. The initially said no, then the story broke, and now they are backing down. I would expect that he knew what was in the HOA laws when he moved there... if you don't like the laws, work to change them, don't violate them... Granted I have a real problem with any American business, association, coop, or whatever having a problem with the American flag and a service flag flying... but that's just me I suppose!

I fully agree ... but the answer to the problem that you and I share is not to buy in a subdivision where the homeowners' association constrains one from flying what one wants to fly ... or, barring that, to seek an exemption from the HOA. From what I've read here, this guy is in violation of not only the HOA but also the city code. One way or another, he needs an exemption from both ... or he needs to take down his flagpoles.

LTC (Join to see) - Yep, totally agree Sir. It is a disservice to all the great men and women who have/are/will serve when you break the law to make a point.

I admire his patriotism and appreciate his service, but it sends a message when you refuse to comply with the rules. I hope he gets it resolved but in the meanwhile he should comply. There are processes to bring about change and he should go that route. He may believe he is acting on his own behalf, but his actions reflect on many other Veterans and military members. Other citizens have gone through this in the past.
