I'd go for the M-4, the bolt action rifle and the 1911.

PO1 William “Chip“ Nagel—same platforms I was trained on, with the addition of the M16 and Beretta M9. Still have a Mossberg 590SP, 1911, and Beretta 92FS in my personal arsenal (with a few others).

I have four of the five he listed, but I don't really like his approach -- "you should have this gun because it sets you up for a bunch of other guns." You could just as easily pick one of those other guns on that basis. Historical & military significance are good criteria, but that still doesn't address the question of why you should own them. Ammo availability is a better reason IMO. The best reasons for owning guns are suitability for intended purpose, and the best available match of quality and value.

Larry is a great guy, but he's wrong on the five guns, even with the bonus.

Well by that regard we couldninclude the m14 that was one of the first battle rifles created but I do see your point. Though the AK47 is an assault rifle while the M4 is a Carbine and both are cornerstones in their category.

PFC (Join to see) - you could include the M14/M1A, I just don't think it is as useful as the G3 or FAL (nor as well engineered).

Both the AK and M4/M16 are in the assault weapon / carbine category. Both are short rifles, both use an intermediate-powered cartridge, and both are descendants of the StG44. Neither are battle rifles.

Capt Gregory Prickett - I agree with your opinion on weapon choice Capt.

However, I am not a big fan of the .223/5.56mm round as a man stopper. But there is so much ammo available, it would be silly not to own a rifle in that caliber. During the zombie apocalypse (or whatever it might be), having readily available ammo is a good thing. That is the only reason I own one.

SMSgt Thor Merich - I certainly have no objection to the 5.56/.223, and would include one in my 4-gun battery as the .22 centerfire rifle. It would probably be the Sig 551A1, if I could find one. That gives you the 5.56mm round, together with an action based off of the AK.
